Each member of this group is gifted with a stunning voice and possesses their own star power, but when they work together, Pentatonix is a dynamic force. They never fail to present a riveting performance on stage. These are clean cut kids with a bright future ahead of them.
From Arlington Texas, Pentatonix is an American a cappella group of five vocalists, Scott Hoying, Kirstie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola. The group won the third season of The Sing-Off on NBC in 2013. Their reward was $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony. Their 2012 debut EP, PTX Vol. 1, charted at #14 on the Billboard 200, and their 2013 release, PTX Vol. 2, debuted #10 on the Billboard 200. Pentatonix is currently preparing for their worldwide tour in 2014.
Three of the original members Kirstin “Kirstie” Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, and Scott Hoying were friends who grew up together and just graduated from high school in 2010, so they are all very young. Avriel “Avi” Kaplan, already a well known vocal bass in the a cappella community, met the original members through a mutual friend and Kevin Olusola was approached through a YouTube video that featured his unusual talent of beatboxing and cello at the same time. Born in 1989, Kevin is older. He graduated from Yale, Pre-Med, and also speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese after spending a year studying in China.
The main goal of the group is to become the first mainstream a cappella group in recent times. The quintet derives its influences from pop, dubstep, electro, reggae and hip-hop. These young people are very talented, work together very well, can put together a show rather quickly and have triumphed in a wide range of musical genres. See for yourself.
